Produced at the edge of the commemoration of the bicentennials of independence in Latin America, this book takes the collective dimension of that eminently American historical epic.

From Mexico City to Punta Arenas, including Bogotá, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires and the United States, 35 authors examine critically the bicentennials preparations and the echoes of the centennials. Interpretations are presented in the fields of anthropology, history, economics and political science, social development, photography and film, architecture and urban development. Each topic is addressed for a different scale, including regional, national, local, and sectoral perspectives.

The interpretive information and content of this book and accompanying DVD contribute to the collective construction of knowledge about how Latin American countries take the challenge of the bicentennial as a historically significant moment for rethinking the past. Moreover, the process of reflection instigates a critical view of the present and stimulates the imagination to create a future of inclusion and justice.
