The New School Observatory on Latin America (OLA) 
is pleased to announce:

 First annual New School Graduate Student Conference on Latin America
Call for Submissions 2014

The conference aims to showcase exemplary graduate student work that responds to critical questions related to Latin America, in order to inspire dialogue between students across The New School.

Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by a jury of New School faculty. From all the abstracts, ten applicants will be selected to participate in the New School Graduate Conference on Latin America on Thursday, April 24th

These ten selected applicants will present at the conference. The three submissions that best demonstrate advanced research and critical understanding will be selected by The New School jury to receive a prize of $300 each. The awards will be presented at the closing of the conference.

Criteria for and Guidelines Submissions:

To participate in this call, you must be a currently enrolled New School Graduate student.

Submissions must have a clear focus on Latin America and/or the Caribbean.

Submissions should respond to critical questions related to at least one of the following areas: Economics, Urban Development, Public Policy, Environment and Sustainability, Poverty, Social Justice, International Aid, Inequality, Human Rights, Governance, Media, Anthropology, History, Innovative Design, Demographics, Conflict & Security.

If the submission was created by more than one individual, all group members must give consent for the work to be submitted and published*.

Submissions can take the form of academic essay, photographic essay, video, performance piece, sound art, or original musical composition.

Academic essays
A one-page abstract should be submitted in PDF format to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted, completed essays between 5,000 – 10,000 words excluding bibliography and including footnotes should be submitted to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it in PDF format by 5:00pm EDT, April 14th.

Photographic essays
A one-page abstract describing your project should be submitted in PDF format to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted, the completed photographic essay and a one to two page written statement contextualizing the work in PDF format should be submitted to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 5:00pm EDT, April 14th.

Videos, performance pieces, sound art and musical compositions
A one-page abstract describing your project should be submitted in PDF format to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted, the completed piece should be no longer than 5 minutes, shall be submitted on CD, DVD, thumb drive or uploaded to the web and should meet the following specifications, Audio: mp3, minimum quality 128kps, Video: mp4, 1280 x 720 pixels minimum frame rate 24fps. In addition it must include a one to two page written statement contextualizing the work in PDF format.

FEBRUARY 19 - Application Deadline
A complete application should include a submission form (attached), your CV, a one page abstract in PDF format and receipt of confirmation from the OLA office.

MARCH 7 - Notice to qualifiers
Conference qualifiers will be selected by a jury of New School faculty and notified by 5:00pm EST.

APRIL 14 - Final submission deadline

APRIL 24 - Conference
Conference qualifiers will present their completed submissions at the OLA Graduate Student Conference on Latin America on April 24th, 2014, 10am -5pm.
