September 22, 2008: Latin America on the Move. Forum of Presidents "Food, Energy, and Social Justice in Latin America".
A panel with President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina and President Evo Morales of Bolivia.
New York, United States.
Rising world food and energy prices have created new crises in both rich and poor countries. In Latin America more than 10 million people have fallen below the poverty line in the last year due to food prices alone. Some governments have sought to restrict food exports in order to reduce prices at home, while others have followed the advice of global institutions to free exports to raise world supplies. Rising energy prices have also contributed to economic instability while creating hardships for poor countries and within those countries, for poor people.
The Forum of Presidents will present these issues and how they affect Latin American countries. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina and President Evo Morales of Bolivia will discuss these challenges and their impact on the quest for social justice in their countries. Argentina is one of the world's largest exporters of food grains, particularly soya, corn, and wheat, while Bolivia is a major exporter of natural gas. They thus both face the problems of contributing to solving global problems while assuring the needs of their own people.
The Forum of Presidents will be held in Tishman Auditorium at the New School at 66 West 12th Street in New York City from 6 to 7:30pm on September 22, 2008. Simultaneous translation will be provided. The event will also be web-cast.
