img 4228 biancaAs an awardee of the President Nestor Kirchner (PNK) Fellowship sponsored by the Observatory on Latin America (OLA) and the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM) in Argentina, Bianca Moro de Carvalho from Brazil successfully completed a two-week academic exchange at The New School in New York.

Bianca Moro de Carvalho holds a PhD in urbanism from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and an MA in Housing and Urbanism from the Architectural Association Graduate School(AA), in London.

Her work is focused on the dynamics of urban development of the wetlands of Macapá, capital of the State of Amapá in northern Brazil. With her work, Moro de Carvalho shared not only her research on this understudied area, but also her long-standing work leading a community participation initiative involving local communities and architecture students from the Federal University of Amapá.

As part of her activities Bianca presented her work on a closed–door Seminar for a diverse audience of New School’s Faculty and students. In addition, and key to the activities of the Fellowship, she met individually with academics and practitioners in her field, and presented a Public Lecture in the Orozco room of The New School to a New York wide audience.

Seminars at The New School

img 4615biancseminarThe seminars are an essential activity to the Fellows, as it gives them the opportunity to receive feedback on their research, as well as on the clarity and structure of the presentation. This session gives the Fellows new challenges as it is their first encounter with the process of re-thinking about presenting and introducing their research into a new context.

Bianca’s seminar took place on March 1st 2017, and was attended by New School professors, Peter Lucas, Alberto Minujin, Raul Rubio, Michael Cohen and Margarita Gutman. They were joined by Masters and PhD students from the Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Urban Policies, International Affairs and Political Science programs.

During the seminar, Bianca received feedback about the need to emphasize her work on community participation in the Amazon region and how that combines with her academic background.img 4178 watson

Interviews and Visits in New York

Bianca spent most of her time meeting with experts in the fields of urban, environmental and design studies. This allowed her to expand her network in the academia and provided her with a different inter-disciplinary perspective on her own topic, particularly in terms of design. Through her personal interviews, Bianca was able to set up future field visits by New School students to her community in the Amazon, in addition to being invited to impart two classes as guest speaker during her time in New York.

She met with the Dean of the New School for Public Enagement (NSPE), Mary Watson, as well as with professors Timon Phearson and Fabio Parsecoli from the New School for Social Research (NSSR). Bianca also had personal interviews with Ana Baptista, Cecilia Martinez, Mindy Fullulove and Chris London from NSPE. From Parsons School of Design, she met professors Ioanna Theocharoupolou, Eduardo Satzowski and Rositsa Ilieva.
