SUMMARY:Resilience from the Ground Up: Care Systems as Climate Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:As climate impacts intensify\, local governments are recognizing that social resilience and ecological resilience are deeply intertwined. This session explores how municipal care systems\, ranging from community support networks and social safety nets to public health and caretaking services\, function as critical\, frontline climate infrastructure. By centering equity\, gender justice\, and local governance\, speakers will share experiences in how investing in care work and community well-being strengthens urban adaptability\, protects vulnerable populations during extreme climate events\, and builds long-term institutional resilience from the ground up. \nREGISTER HERE \nThursday\, September 24\, 2026\,\n6:00PM to 8:00PM\nKlein Conference Room\nAlvin Johnson/J.M. SUMMARY:TEDx talk on the Future by Margarita Gutman
DESCRIPTION:Margarita Gutman\, director of the OLA\, will speak at TEDxRíodelaPlata\, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a major festival of ideas focused on the theme of “Time.” The event will explore how people feel\, measure\, and share this essential dimension of human experience. It will take place on Sunday\, November 9th\, at the Buenos Aires Convention Center (CEC\, Figueroa Alcorta 2099) and will bring together scientists\, artists\, creators\, and thinkers in a space where science\, music\, creativity\, and conversation will intertwine throughout the day. \nHuman time\, our time\, and other times. Time as an idea. An idea that lives in our minds or is felt in our bodies. Speed\, rhythm\, music. Time flies\, and some things have only one possible time. We are made of time. As humans we are our lifespan. We try to capture it\, to record it in photographs\, both paper and digital. Some we will never look at again because we won’t have the time. It is history\, it is past\, present\, and future. The future is made up of our desires\, possibilities\, and probabilities. And when we want to stop time\, we pray\, meditate\, or perhaps throw a party.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Colonized Temporalities\, with Carmen Ibáñez Cueto
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory on Latin America invites you to the lecture: COLONIZED TEMPORALITIES\, by Bolivian Anthropologist and Researcher from the Freie Universität Berlin\, Carmen Ibáñez Cueto. \nLecture:\nCarmen Ibáñez Cueto – Anthropologist\, Researcher\, Freie Universität Berlin \nComments:\nAnn Stoler – Professor of Anthropology\, The New School for Social Research \nWelcome:\nMichael Cohen – Director OLA\, The New School \nModerator:\nJuan Manuel González Scobie – Senior Fellow\, OLA\, The New School \nREGISTER HERE* \nMany historical accounts of the Spanish conquest of the Americas depict this as the clash of different cultures. Professor Ibáñez will further deepen this characterization by using as an entry point the matter of temporalities\, looking specifically at the high Andean region of South America. She argues that this contact between colonizers and colonized\, in this case Aymara and Quechua peoples\, brought together two forms of conceiving time that were very different. The result of this encounter was what she calls a chrono-structural mismatch\, with important consequences that should be unveiled and understood. \nMany analysts have suggested that the way people experience time is subjective\, and that time is a social – cultural construct. Time for the Indians mentioned above is conceived as a moving spiral\, whereas the Spanish introduced a linear and progressive notion of time. \nShe cites an Aymara proverb which affirms that people should walk in the present looking at the past\, carrying the future on their backs. For them the future is a continuous return to the past. In contrast for Europeans the future is a continuous breaking with and overcoming the past. These different temporal imaginaries brought forth a challenging situation: a hybrid coexistence of temporalities in which colonizers sought to domesticate the notion and experience of time of the colonized\, and the latter resisted the imposition of the Spanish imaginary. \nProfessor Ibáñez argues that this is not only a significant historical line of inquiry: it poses an important question for the present\, which has guided her research for some years. How can a mixed society (“mestizo”)\, composed of people who still hold different temporal imaginaries\, co- exist and project a common future? Do these visions collide\, complement each other\, or deny one another? \nTuesday\, February 27\, 2024\n6PM – 8PM\nUniversity Center\, Room 105\n63 5th Avenue \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact lizac194@newschool.edu. \n*This is an in-person event. Please RSVP by clicking on the red register button on the linked page. \nPresented by the Observatory on Latin America.

SUMMARY:It's not $30.00 pesos\, it's 30 years
DESCRIPTION:An analysis of protest graphics and graffiti in Santiago\, Chile\, as a way to understand the country’s current crisis. \nPUBLIC LECTURE \nIn October 2019\, a minor subway fare hike of 30 pesos triggered a social revolution\, one marked by massive protests\, organized strikes\, and widespread violence and vandalism. The month-long wave of unrest shook Latin America’s “most stable” democracy to its core. \nIn this talk\, the speakers will discuss and show the protest graphics and graffiti covering the walls of Santiago in Chile as a way to understand the roots\, social configurations and demands of Chile’s contemporary crisis. Their analysis traces the neoliberalism born in the Pinochet era and the struggles over memory and memorial sites that continue to this day. \n  \nSpeakers \nTerri Gordon – Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at The New School. Her work explores the intersections of transitional justice\, post-authoritarian literature\, memory studies\, and gender studies. She is currently writing a book on the literature of memory in post-dictatorial Chile. \nEric Zolov – Associate Professor of Latin American history at Stony Brook University. In fall 2019 he was a Fulbright Scholar teaching at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago\, Chile. His most recent book is The Last Good Neighbor: Mexico in the Global Sixties (Duke\, 2020). \n  \nThursday\, March 5\, 2020\n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST\n66 W 12th St\nRoom A712\, Orozco Room\nNew York\, NY 10011\nUnited States\nView Map

SUMMARY:CONFERENCE | PARAGUAY: A 30-YEAR OLD DEMOCRACY\, PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES
DESCRIPTION:Public Conference \nSpeakers: \nLuis Ortiz\, Susana Sottoli and Javier Uriarte \nOver the last 30 years\, democracy as a social project in Paraguay became the focus of important efforts from all social and political actors. The relation between market freedom and social equality has been the source of heated debates in the process of reforming the different sectors of the country\, notably\, the educational system\, the economic structure\, and the government’s institutional design. Standing between two South American giants (Brazil and Argentina)\, Paraguay is a lesser known country. This event is a unique opportunity to gain familiarity with this country beyond its mere political history\, through the eyes and ideas of experts and Paraguayan intellectuals. The set of speakers offer a glimpse into the social foundation of Paraguayan political institutions\, the collective actions of different social actors\, the multiple historical and cultural mediations\, as well as the inevitable social contradictions that pose obstacles to the construction of the democratic regime in Paraguay. \nWelcoming remarks:\nMichael Cohen\, OLA Co-Director and SGPIA Professor on International Affairs\, The New School \nIntroduced by: \nJulio Cesar Arriola\, Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the United Nations.
