SUMMARY:It's not $30.00 pesos\, it's 30 years
DESCRIPTION:An analysis of protest graphics and graffiti in Santiago\, Chile\, as a way to understand the country’s current crisis. \nPUBLIC LECTURE \nIn October 2019\, a minor subway fare hike of 30 pesos triggered a social revolution\, one marked by massive protests\, organized strikes\, and widespread violence and vandalism. The month-long wave of unrest shook Latin America’s “most stable” democracy to its core. \nIn this talk\, the speakers will discuss and show the protest graphics and graffiti covering the walls of Santiago in Chile as a way to understand the roots\, social configurations and demands of Chile’s contemporary crisis. Their analysis traces the neoliberalism born in the Pinochet era and the struggles over memory and memorial sites that continue to this day. \n  \nSpeakers \nTerri Gordon – Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at The New School. Her work explores the intersections of transitional justice\, post-authoritarian literature\, memory studies\, and gender studies. She is currently writing a book on the literature of memory in post-dictatorial Chile. \nEric Zolov – Associate Professor of Latin American history at Stony Brook University. In fall 2019 he was a Fulbright Scholar teaching at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago\, Chile. His most recent book is The Last Good Neighbor: Mexico in the Global Sixties (Duke\, 2020). \n  \nThursday\, March 5\, 2020\n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST\n66 W 12th St\nRoom A712\, Orozco Room\nNew York\, NY 10011\nUnited States\nView Map

SUMMARY:CONFERENCE | PARAGUAY: A 30-YEAR OLD DEMOCRACY\, PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES
DESCRIPTION:Public Conference \nSpeakers: \nLuis Ortiz\, Susana Sottoli and Javier Uriarte \nOver the last 30 years\, democracy as a social project in Paraguay became the focus of important efforts from all social and political actors. The relation between market freedom and social equality has been the source of heated debates in the process of reforming the different sectors of the country\, notably\, the educational system\, the economic structure\, and the government’s institutional design. Standing between two South American giants (Brazil and Argentina)\, Paraguay is a lesser known country. This event is a unique opportunity to gain familiarity with this country beyond its mere political history\, through the eyes and ideas of experts and Paraguayan intellectuals. The set of speakers offer a glimpse into the social foundation of Paraguayan political institutions\, the collective actions of different social actors\, the multiple historical and cultural mediations\, as well as the inevitable social contradictions that pose obstacles to the construction of the democratic regime in Paraguay. \nWelcoming remarks:\nMichael Cohen\, OLA Co-Director and SGPIA Professor on International Affairs\, The New School \nIntroduced by: \nJulio Cesar Arriola\, Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the United Nations.
