SUMMARY:PANEL · Contesting Futures: Beyond the UN Summit for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Is the UN approach to the future ambitious enough? Does it represent the aspirations of the diversity of peoples around the world? Can it empower nations\, communities\, and cultures to identify their paths to fulfill their own expectations\, desires\, and capacities? \nThis panel will challenge the UN Summit approach envisioning a single future based on decades of meetings and international commitments. \nSpeakers will examine different attitudes towards the future\, means of articulating fears and desires for the world to come\, including possibilities\, limitations\, and agency. The idea is to create spaces for more inclusive imaginations. \nThe event will conclude with an open conversation with the audience about their insights provoked by the panelists. \n  \nPROGRAM \n6 pm \nLisa Rubin\, Interim Executive Dean\, Schools of Public Engagement\, The New School \n\nWelcoming Remarks                       \n\nMargarita Gutman\, Emeritus Professor; Co-Director\, OLA \n\nIntroducing the Event\n\nJuan Manuel González Scobie\, Senior Fellow\, OLA \n\nThe UN Summit of the Future\n\n  \nPANELISTS \n6.30 pm \nAdam Brown\, Vice Provost of Research; Professor of Psychology\, The New School \n\nThe Power of Attitudes: Shaping futures and acting\n\nDarrick Hamilton\, Director of the Institute on Race\, Power and Political Economy\, The New School \n\nBoundaries of Worries: Designing equitable paths\n\nEliana Martinez Herrera\, Professor of Public Health\, Universidad de Antioquia\, Colombia \n\nPeople’s Creativity: Disrupting futures                       \n\nSheela Patel\, Founding Director\, Slum Dwellers International (SDI)\, Mumbai \n\nVulnerability Empowered: Shaping socially just futures\n\n  \n7:30 pm \nOpen Discussion Moderated by: \nMichael Cohen\, Director\, Doctoral Program in Public and Urban Policy; Co-Director\, OLA \n  \nREGISTER here* \nYou are welcome! \nThursday September 19\, 2024\n6:00PM – 8:00PM (EST)\nStarr Hall\, University Center\, UL102\n63 5th Avenue\, New York \n  \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact contacto@2084futurosimaginados.org \n*This is an in-person event. SUMMARY:ONLINE: Futures of the Past · First Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe program 2084: Futures Imagined from the South seeks to unleash\, promote and strengthen the imagination of futures as a capacity\, both individual and collective. It seeks to mobilize thinking about the future of Latin American cities from a multiplicity of voices and experiences\, with the aim of provoking conversations between diverse actors and thereby contributing to the collective construction of that future. \nThe program also intends to investigate and discuss how the future was thought in past times – what we call Futures of the Past\, and how this was reflected in different media: cinema\, literature\, plastic arts\, music\, urban plans\, popular culture and even different worldviews. \nIn this discussion\, the panelists will address the futures of the past from very different sources: popular imaginations of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century reflected in illustrated magazines\, contrasted with the imaginations of experts in urban planning; the conception of space-time in Quechua culture and how this questions linear views of time; and\, in a shift in focus\, the reimagining of the early 21st century from hypothetical interviews conducted in 2066. \n. \nPanelists\n• Alma Sarmiento\, Universidad del Rosario\, Bogotá\, Colombia\n• Enrique Rodriguez\, Icesi\, Cali\, Colombia\n• Martin Groissman\, University of Buenos Aires\, Buenos Aires\, Argentina\n• Margarita Gutman\, The New School\, New York\, United States \nModerator\n• Juan Manuel González\, The New School\, New York\, United States \n  \nThis webinar will be held through the Zoom and will be in Spanish. \nREGISTER HERE
