cabreraHow can design improve the living conditions in low-income urban areas? How can the collaboration of the disciplines of design and social sciences improve social development? Is it possible to explore new ways of urban thinking through exploring the convergence and collaboration between design and the social sciences? These questions represent some of the most challenging issues facing Latin American today.

Guillermo Germán Cabrera, Provost of the Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, offered an overview of the scholarly and community activities underway at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism at The University of Buenos Aires (FADU-UBA) to better living conditions of low-income urban populations in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area.

FADU-UBA, with over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students, hosts six divisions covering architecture, graphic design, industrial design, planning and landscape design, textile and fashion design, and image and sound. It is the leading design institution in Argentina and one of the most recognized in Latin America.
