SUMMARY:Iran #3037: Political Sexual Violence Under The Dictatorship
DESCRIPTION:The Observatory on Latin America and the Schools of Public Engagement invite you to: \nFilm Screening of Irán #3037 [violencia politico sexual en dictadura] (Iran #3037: Political Sexual Violence under the Dictatorship) \nIran #3037 was a clandestine center of detention and torture under the brutal regime of General Augusto Pinochet. Referred to as The Sexy Blindfold (La Venda Sexy) or the Discotheque\, it was known for sexual violation and abuse. Today it is a site of protest as activists call for the house to be transformed into a feminist memorial site. Iran #3037 powerfully dramatizes the situation of the family living in the house today and the struggle surrounding the site. The drama had a long run in Chile\, playing in the National Theater of Chile as part of a “Theater in Emergency” cycle. While the play deals with the past\, it hit a chord with the public as it seemed to dramatize the police violence surrounding the recent social uprising (estallido social) as well. \nPlease join us for the first film screening of Iran #3037 in the United States followed by a conversation with the director\, Patricia Artés Ibañez. The film is subtitled in English. \nPatricia Artés Ibañez is a Chilean researcher and feminist theater director. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Thought\, Culture and Society from the University of Valparaíso. She has co-authored an anthology of 20th-century women’s playwrights\, Evidencias\, las otras dramaturgias (Evidence: the Other Playwrights). \nThe event will be introduced by Terri Gordon\, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature\, Schools of Public Engagement. \nThis is an in-person event. \nWhere: Wollman Hall\, 65 W. 11 th Street\, Room B500\nDate and Time:\nThursday 13 October 2022\n6:00-8:00 pm (EST) \nREGISTER HERE \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact risac646@newschool.edu \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nPresented by the Observatory on Latin America and the Schools of Public Engagement. Co-sponsored by the School of Undergraduate Studies and the Gender and Sexualities Studies Institute of The New School and the Modern Languages and Literatures Department of Brooklyn College.

SUMMARY:Book Launch · The Walls of Santiago
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in October 2019\, Chile was marked by protests and political upheaval\, as what began as civil disobedience transformed into a vast resistance movement. Throughout\, one of the most striking aspects of the protests was the murals\, graffiti\, and other political graphics that became ubiquitous in Chilean cities. \nIn this fascinating\, beautifully illustrated book\, Terri Gordon-Zolov and Eric Zolov—who were in Santiago to witness and document the protests from their very beginnings—offer a vivid catalog of Chilean wall art\, along with reflections on its artistic antecedents\, the context of global protest movements\, and the long shadow cast by Chile’s authoritarian past. \nAs a result of the uprising\, Chile is now in the process of writing a new constitution\, and previous student leader Gabriel Boric has been elected as president. The Walls of Santiago provides a window into the origins of this profoundly democratic yet revolutionary process. \nIntroduction and welcoming remarks:\nMichael Cohen\, Director\, OLA\nMary Watson\, Executive Dean\, NSPE \nPanelists:\nTerri Gordon-Zolov\, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs; Associate Professor of Comparative Literature\, The New School\nEric Zolov\, Professor of History\, Stony Brook University\nMarcial Godoy-Anativia\, Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics\, New York University\nJulia Foulkes\, Professor of History\, The New School\nNidhi Srinivas\, Associate Professor of Management\, The New School \nPresented by the Observatory on Latin America\, the Schools of Public Engagement\, and the School of Undergraduate Studies. \nDate and Time:\nThursday 5 May 2022\n6:00-8:00 pm (EST)\nAmphitheater 404\, Alvin Johnson/J.M.
