International Conference “Building Latin American Bicentennials in the Age of Globalization”, The New School, February 2009: Alberto Minujín, Luis Colón Llamas, Ileana Versace, Margarita Gutman, Graciela Raponi, Andrea Cuarterolo, Luis Inostroza Pino, Alberto Boselli, Alejandra Niedermaier, Fernando Carrión, Patricio Gross, Rita Molinos and Michael Cohen.

In the context of the International Call “Building Latin American Bicentennials in the Age of Globalization”, an International Conference was held at The New School to reflect on the present and past commemorations of national independence in Latin American countries, on February 26th and 27th, 2009.

Well-known scholars from Latin America, the United States and Europe participated in this Regional Conference, where the five submissions awarded by the International Call were presented.

The five awards and the seven honorable mentions were selected in the Last Evaluation Round celebrated in the Universidad Central de Chile on November 30th and December 1st, 2008.

The papers and audiovisual presentations selected are going to be published in the book Construir Bicentenarios Latinoamericanos en la Era de la Globalización, coordinated by Margarita Gutman y Rita Molinos.

This project was organized by the Observatory on Latin America (OLA), The New School University, New York, and the Programa Bicentenarios, Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo, Universidad de Buenos Aires (FADU-UBA); in collaboration with the Centro de Estudios del Patrimonio (CEPAT), Facultad de Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Paisaje, Universidad Central de Chile; the institutional support of Fundación SES; and has been recognized by the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Argentina as of public interest. 

These activities were carried out with the collaboration of Project A412, Scientific Program 2008-2009 UBACYT, based on the Institute of Human Spaciality, FADU-UBA: “Latin American Bicentennials: Commemoration and the World to Come. Signs of Memory in the City and Architecture”, directed by Margarita Gutman and co-directed by Rita Molinos.
