The OLA is pleased to announce a Call for Submissions for the second annual New School Graduate Student & Alumni Conference on Latin America. The conference aims to showcase exemplary graduate student and alumni work that responds to critical questions related to Latin America in order to inspire dialogue between students and alumni across the New School.
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by a jury of New School faculty. Ten applicants will be selected to participate in the New School Graduate Conference on Latin America on Wednesday, April 29th, 2015. The three submissions that best demonstrate advanced research and critical understanding will be selected by the New School jury to receive a prize of $300 each.
Criteria for and Guidelines Submissions:
1. To participate in this call, you must be a currently enrolled New School Graduate Student or a New School Alumnus.
2. Submissions must focus on Latin America and/or the Caribbean.
3. Submissions should respond to critical questions related to at least one of the following areas: Anthropology, Conflict & Security, Demographics, Economics, Environment and Sustainability, Governance, History, Human Rights, Inequality, Innovative Design, International Aid, Media, Non-profit and NGO Management, Poverty, Public Policy, Social Justice, Urban Development
4. If the submission was created by more than one individual, all group members must give consent for the work to be submitted and published*.
5. Submissions can take the form of academic essay, photographic essay, video, performance piece, sound art, original musical composition or design proposal.
a. Academic essays: A one-page abstract should be submitted in PDF format to ola@newschool.edu by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted, completed essays between 5,000 – 10,000 words excluding bibliography and including footnotes should be submitted to ola@newschool.edu in PDF format by 5:00pm EDT, April 20th.
b. Photographic essays: A one-page abstract describing your project should be submitted in PDF format to ola@newschool.edu by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted the completed photographic essay and a one to two page written statement contextualizing the work in PDF format should be submitted to ola@newschool.edu by 5:00pm EDT, April 20th.
c. Videos, performance pieces, sound art and musical compositions: A one-page abstract describing your project should be submitted in PDF format to ola@newschool.edu by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted, the completed piece should be no longer than 5 minutes, shall be submitted on CD, DVD, thumb drive or uploaded to the web and should meet the following specifications, Audio: mp3, minimum quality 128kps, Video: mp4, 1280 x 720 pixels minimum frame rate 24fps. In addition it must include a one-two page written statement contextualizing the work in PDF format. All materials should be submitted to Desiree LaVecchia, at 72 5th Avenue, Room 524 or in the case of a link, emailed to ola@newschool.edu by 5:00pm EDT, April 20th.
d. Design Proposals: A one-page abstract describing your project and two key images of your proposal should be submitted in PDF format to ola@newschool.edu by 5:00pm EST on February 19th. If accepted, the completed project should include one 36″x48″ submission board and a one-two page written statement contextualizing the work in PDF format. All materials should be submitted to Desiree LaVecchia, at 72 5th Avenue, by 5:00pm EDT, April 20th.

Conference qualifiers will be selected by a jury of New School faculty and notified by 5:00pm EST.

Final submission deadline

Conference
Conference qualifiers will present their completed submissions at the OLA Graduate Student Conference on Latin America on April 29th, 2015, 10am -5pm.
