Many Latin American countries have experimented with development policies and approaches over the past decade. These have resulted in reduced poverty and inequality, while opening new opportunities for society at large. The two President Nestor Kirchner Fellows will discuss their recent work on alternative employment policies in Brazil and community mobilization through art in Colombia.

OLA is pleased to welcome Fernando Kleiman and María Villa Largacha, President Néstor Kirchner Fellows for 2013/2014. Both were awarded a Fellowship after demonstrating academic excellence and a commitment to public service.

Fernando Kleiman is a Sociologist and Special Advisor to the Minister of Social Development in Brasilia. He specializes in issues of productive inclusion, job creation, and income generation in Latin America, specifically Brazil.

María Villa Largacha holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy, with a focus on politics and ethics in contemporary democracies. She is currently working on a public policy approach and implementation plan for an art pedagogy program in public venues exhibiting contemporary art.

This Fellowship is inspired by the legacy and achievements of former President Néstor Kirchner during his term as President of Argentina (2003-2007), coupled with his important work as the first Secretary General of UNASUR (2010). It focuses on the training of young leaders in South America, is organized by The Observatory on Latin America (OLA) of The New School, New York, and the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
